Market Figures

The turnover for computer and video game software amounted to a total of 1.99 billion euro in Germany in 2011. This represents an increase of 3.5 percent. The revenues are divided across three main core business fields:

  • Data media and downloads: sales of PC and console games as well as mobile games
  • Online and browser games: expenditure on subscriptions and premium accounts
  • Virtual items: expenditure on additional items/item selling

BIU’s market figures are based on a survey by the Consumer Research Assocation (GfK) of 25,000 consumers in Germany. The results are representative for 67.8 million people over the age of 10 living in Germany.

Against the background of the increasing dynamics of digital businee models, the statistical methods used in the co-operation between BIU and GfK to measure turnover of virtual items have been adjusted. For the year 2010, this resulted in an increase in expenditure on virtual items from € 73 million to € 137 million, and thus a total turnover of € 1.92 billion for the year 2010. With these adjustments, both growth and changes in user behavior in the segment are realistically reflected.
