09.11.2011: Bundesverband für Interaktive Unterhaltungssoftware e. V. (Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software e. V. )/(BIU) and Bundesverband der Computerspielindustrie (Federal Association of the Computer Games Industry)/(G.A.M.E.) establish “Stift

Berlin, 9 November 2011. The two federal associations of the German computer games industry, BIU and G.A.M.E., will establish a foundation for interactive entertainment media at the beginning of 2012. Its fundamental goals are the promotion of the quality of interactive media “made in Germany”, the implementation of projects to embed interactive media into society as well as scientific research into interactive media. Important projects of the foundation will be the German Computer Games Award as well as events and initiatives regarding the computer games cultural heritage, the protection of youth in the media and the promotion of innovations and young talents.
The foundation will have its headquarters in the capital region Berlin-Brandenburg.

Dr. Olaf Coenen, Spokesman for the Board of BIU said, “I am very happy that we can pool all essential activities of the industry with this foundation when it comes to promoting quality and young talent, as well as the protection of youth in the media and that we can develop new projects. By doing this, we, as one of the leading industries in the media and creative sector,  will expand our social commitment even further. I am very glad that the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, and the Prime Minister of the Federal State of Brandenburg, Matthias Platzeck, have been personally involved with the foundation.”

Thomas Friedmann, Chairman of G.A.M.E. said, “Computer and video games have become the leading medium for large parts of the population and have arrived in the middle of the society. Therefore, it makes sense and is correct that the planned foundation contributes to society when it comes to the further development of the medium and dealing with it.”

Elmar Giglinger, Managing Director of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg said, “We are very happy that the application for the foundation’s headquarters, which the Medienboard has prepared together with the two ferdal states, has been successful! The foundation fits in well with the digital strategy of the Medienboard for the capital region and is in the right place in the creative metropolis of the Republic.”
